The body is at rest, hands motionless on the blanket
Tubes and machines indicate life
but the face remains slack-jawed, eyes closed
His body hovers between earth and sky
Time is inconsequential
There is no dreaming, no hunger, no pain.
In tiny increments, the brain begins to process
each effort is exhausting
After three months, a slight movement
begins behind the eyelids
Lethargic from the medication---it takes long while
to return to present space and hour
When his body and mind arrive,
shock from the intense distress
cause vomiting and a doubling over
He retreats into nothing.
With the ebb and flow of hurt,
come little windows of sound and touch
Someone strokes his hand, smooths his forehead
A warm wash cloth feels so comforting
her voice whispers
"I need you, don't leave me."
Repeated again and again until he nods--comprehending
The borders of the more beautiful country withdraw,
his awakening complete.
